Resistance to Chinese Censorship Goes Virtual

Boing Boing reported that an hour long video satire of Chinese government censorship, called War of Internet Addiction, has had 10 million views by Chinese netizens.  It was filmed entirely in World of Warcraft.

You can find commentary at DigiCha and YouKu Buzz

The original video is at the YouKu Buzz link, but the speed is very slow.  You can find an English subtitled version at YouTube in seven installments.

Bad Joo Joo, No Biscuit!

The Crunch Pad is no more since, apparently, the company handling much of the technical work, Fusion Garage, broke its agreement with TechCrunch, the company handling the business side, and skipped with it.  Instead, Fusion Garage will be putting out the tablet computer and calling it the Joo Joo.  A rather unfortunate name for a product since it is far too easy to associate it with the phrase Bad JuJu, especially with the recent legal tanglings.

UPDATE: Fusion Garage's take on the split and Wired's review of the Joo Joo.

Looking for a new life streaming service

I have been using storytlr as my life streaming service.  I am very satisfied with it, but it will be closing down at the end of the year and I want, I probably don't need, a new one.  I signed up for FriendFeed, but don't really use it and haven't been impressed by it.  Everything seems just too big, whereas storytlr is simple and elegant.

So if you have any suggestions for cool life streaming services to check out, please post a comment where ever you see this post.  Thanks!

Lists make Twitter easier, more useful

I must confess that I have been tweeting less and viewing both Facebook and Twitter considerably less as well.  I am not sure quite why that is, but I think I hit a point with Twitter, at least, where it became hard to pay attention to what my friends were saying on Twitter.

However, Twitter finally released a beta version of their Lists feature.  After setting up a few of them, I find my Twitter feed much more manageable.  Good going, Twitter!

Shutting down Kula Ring

I recently found the site Just For The Love Of It
that does pretty much what I wanted to do with my Kula Ring project.  It does not do all that I wanted to do, but since they are further along, it just does not make sense to keep Kula Ring around taking up my thoughts and limited attention, if only to worry about not doing it.

So, I am
officially shutting Kula Ring down and will keep the site around as
long as I want to pay for the domain name.  The decision took me all of two days to make, and allows me to concentrate on other projects that I have been thinking about.

I suggest that folks who want to give others the gift of their time and need a tool to help them find folks to give their time to, and more, should go to Just For The Love Of It.

Email appears to be working

I finally tracked down the problem that caused some, but not all, mailers to fail to send mail to jokeefe at jamesokeefe dot org.

I had setup a CNAME record for jamesokeefe.org that pointed to jokeefe.typepad.com.  This setting resulted in some servers getting the typepad domain name server and not the correct domain name server.

Those servers that got the typepad dns would email to jokeefe@jokeefe.typepad.com.  Removing this CNAME record and instead setting up an A record that pointed jamesokeefe.org to www.jamesokeefe.org appears to have fixed the problem.

Various folks who have had problems in the past, are now able to email jokeefe at jamesokeefe dot org.  I am most pleased, though it took me too long to fix it.

Thanks to R. Scott Perry's helpful DNS Oversimplified page.

Ok, maybe I could use a life stream

Arstechnica had an interesting review of a new life streaming service called Storytlr.  I liked their idea of allowing users to take items from their life stream and put them together to tell a story.  That and the ability to integrate your life streaming page with your domain peaked my interest.  I tried it out and found the setup easy.  I need to add a picture and update my bio, but stream.jamesokeefe.org exists if you want to get a summary of what I am doing/posting on the web.

However, the one thing you won't find there are my Facebook notices.  Everything I have now often feeds into Facebook as is and I am just not willing to give my Facebook login over to any site.  Storytlr should add Facebook Connect and OpenId/OAuth/OpenSocial/etc support.

AI on my mind

The second half of the fourth and last season of the new Battlestar Galactica (BSG) starts on Friday the 16th.  As someone who got into the show at the start of season three (watching seasons one and two on dvd was a pleasure), I am quite sad to see that it will be over in about three months or so.  It is pretty much the only show I go out of my way to watch with regularity.

There have been a spate of movies and novels on the effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on our society.  Some with AI's working with people and others with them working against humanity.  I have been meaning to start a list of such works of fiction and now seems a fitting time.  However, wikipedia, of course, beat me too it.  However, they don't list the following works of fiction:

Though the last two may have non-sentient AI.
